Jon Hamm added to the cast of Allen Ginsberg pic 'Howl'

Mad Men star and recent 30 Rock guest Jon Hamm has joined the cast of Howl, the adaptation of the story behind Allen Ginsberg’s famed poem, according to Variety. The film is currently shooting with James Franco as Ginsberg and Jeff Daniels, Mary Louise-Parker, and David Strathairn in supporting roles. Hamm will play Jake Ehrlich, the defense attorney in the obscenity trial provoked by the explicit nature of Ginsberg’s collection of poems. (Ehrlich, incidentally, was also the real-life inspiration behind TV’s Perry Mason.) The film is one of two Ginsberg projects in development — the second being Kill Your Darlings, with Adventureland star Jesse Eisenberg playing the iconic poet.

Jennifer Hudson to return to 'American Idol'

Jennifer Hudson is returning to American Idol to perform for one night only, according to the Associated Press. An Idol source told the AP that Hudson is scheduled to tape a performance on Wednesday after the live broadcast is done, and that Fox will air the number at a later date. The performance will be Hudson’s first time back on the Idol stage since her mother, brother, and nephew were killed in October 2008. Hudson, 27, was one of the finalists during Idol‘s third season, and she went on to win an Academy Award for her supporting performance in Dreamgirls.

George Lopez to host TBS talk show

Two years after his self-titled sitcom bowed, George Lopez has signed on to star in a late-night TBS talk show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show will welcome celebrity guests and live music and comedy acts in "an outdoor street-party atmosphere." "George Lopez is a special talent, with an everyman appeal that makes him uniquely positioned to be the next great late-night host," said Michael Wright, exec vp, head of programming for TBS. "George and TBS are going to change the late-night television landscape and bring a brand-new energy to the talk-show genre by giving it a street-party atmosphere. We’re excited to see this show come to life."

Al Gore offers solutions in new book, 'Our Choice'

Picking up where his Oscar-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth left off, Al Gore has teamed with Rodale to publish his next book, Our Choice, on Nov. 3. "An Inconvenient Truth reached millions of people with the message that the climate crisis is threatening the future of human civilization and that it must and can be solved," Gore said in a press release. "Now that the need for urgent action is even clearer with the alarming new findings of the last three years, it is time for a comprehensive global plan that actually solves the climate crisis. Our Choice will answer that call." The book’s conclusions are based on more than 30 "Solutions Summits" the former Vice President has held with scientists, engineers and policy experts, as well as independent research. It explains how saving the earth’s climate should factor into policies designed to create new jobs and stimulate the economy. All proceeds from the book will be donated to the Alliance for Climate Protection.

Dinosaur Jr. readies 'Farm' for June 23 release

Seminal indie-rockers Dinosaur Jr. will return June 23 with Farm, the band announced today via press release. The 12-song set is the fifth album recorded by the original lineup of guitarist J. Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow, and drummer Murph, who reunited after a nearly two-decade split for 2007′s well-received Beyond. Farm will be Dinosaur Jr.’s first release since signing with new label Jagjaguwar.

Chelsea Handler signs three-year TV deal

Variety reports that E! Entertainment’s parent company, Comcast Entertainment Group, has renewed late-night talk show host Chelsea Handler’s contract through 2012. In addition to staying on board as the host and executive producer of Chelsea Lately for the next three years, Handler will produce shows for other Comcast networks (G4, Style, FearNet) through her production company, Borderline Amazing. The deal also gives Comcast first-look rights on any projects produced by Borderline Amazing through 2012.

Kiefer Sutherland's on board for an eighth season of '24'

According to the Associated Press, Kiefer Sutherland said he will return to play Jack Bauer for an eighth season of 24 during an interview in Hong Kong while promoting his role as General W.R. Monger in the new 3-D animated flick Monsters vs. Aliens. Shooting is set to start in May.

Tom Selleck, Catherine O'Hara, and Martin Mull cast in 'Five Killers'

The cast for Lionsgate’s action comedy Five Killers starring Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl has expanded: Tom Selleck and Catherine O’Hara have been cast as Heigl’s domineering father and doting mother, while Martin Mull will play Kutcher’s handler, Holbrook, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The story follows a retired hitman (Kutcher) who goes on the lam with his wife (Heigl) when he learns there’s a price on his head. Robert Luketic (21) will direct the film, which starts shooting this month in France and Atlanta, with a projected release date of June 4, 2010.

'Hillary: The Movie' goes to the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court will hear arguments today to determine if an anti-Hillary Clinton documentary called Hillary: The Movie and its televised promotional clips should be regulated the same way as political ads during election seasons, reports the Associated Press. A conservative group called Citizens United wanted to pay for the film to appear on video-on-demand during Clinton’s bid for the Democratic presidential nomination last year, in addition to running ads on television. But their efforts were thwarted by federal judges who said the movie was tantamount to a political attack ad, and would fall under the McCain-Feingold law if shown on television.

EMI Music shutters digital unit

EMI Music has announced the departure of its digital music president, Douglas Merrill, a former Google Inc. exec who was at the company for less than a year, in a move to fold his unit into its main operations, reports Reuters. Though the label will no longer run a stand-alone digital division, it has promoted Second Life co-founder Cory Ondrejka to executive vice president of digital marketing. EMI’s roster of artists includes Coldplay and Kylie Minogue, and the company is also home to the Beatles’ catalog.
