'More to Love': Dating show for the over-size-2 set will air on Fox

Categories: Television

A new Fox reality dating show, titled More to Love, has began casting its "average-looking" contestants, according to The Hollywood Reporter. With a format similar to The Bachelor (Bachelor exec producer Mike Fleiss is teaming up with Mike Darnell, Fox’s president ofalternative programming, on the series),the contestants will vie for one man, who is being labeled as a "Kevin James type," by going on lavish dates. One new category being added to the mix: makeovers… but not of the physical kind. "We want to send the message that you can be the size you are andstill be lovable," Fleiss told THR. "We aren’t going to thin these girlsdown so they can find love — that’s a backwards message." Adds Darnell, "For six years it’s been skinny-minis and good-looking bachelors, and that’s not what the dating world looks like." No air date for the series has been set.

Hey, Fox…here’s an idea: If you are really going for the Average Joe thing, how about using people of all ethnic backgrounds?
Somehow, I suspect that even with this show, it will be all about chubby but pretty, bland white people…

  • Mana

Being as this is Fox we’re talking about, I’m expecting either, as TellyB said, bland pretty white people who are maybe (gasp! Shock!) a size 4 instead of a 0 (or are ‘She’s All That’-style average — pretty people ‘uglied up’ in various contrived ways) or actually average or maybe even overweight people who are subjected to various scenarios involving cake and donuts because everyone knows if you’re not a 0 it’s because you’re a pig.

This may sound really shallow, but I think most people enjoy watching attractive people. that’s the only reason I watch the bachelorette (and ironically, there was only one guy that I thought was good-looking).

    • Tracy

Cyndie you are WRONG! People love watching all people of all shapes sizes and of course COLORS you moron! How dare you try to pander to those of us who enjoy this show Madison avenue’s idea of beauty
      (skinny plastic people).
I love the fact that fox has presented a fresh view of the real world of dating singles.

      • Tracy

I meant NOT Madison avenues idea of beauty. Sorry got a bit emotional.

Unfortunately – we are still at the place where if you have someone of ethnicity as the “lead” in a program like this, you will likely get fewer people outside of that ethnicity watching that show. If the average joe was Hispanic – you’d probably get fewer white and black viewers. If he was black – fewer white and hispanic viewers.
There are still enough people who disapprove of mixed race couples that it would impact ratings – and they are in a business that needs ratings.
Now – if they get a show established, they can start to take risks. Which is why I’m shocked that The Bachelor/Bachelorette haven’t gone with someone of ethnicity.

NBC already did this show and it was called ‘average joe’. And Fox did the ‘my big fat obnoxious fiance’. Can’t they come up with something new?

  • Jon

“Average” people aren’t always big. I work with, am friends with, and run into beautiful people all the time. It’s kind of odd that when TV shows want to do something about “average” people they think it means they’re fat and ugly. That, obviously, isn’t true in the least.

i am friends with all types too, and i am a big girl but the problem is it seems that they cant have a reality show or for that matter a standard sitcom without skinny pretty people ( on the outside)because they dont think the public will watch if the skinny girls arent looking good or running around half naked. i get tired of watching that crap all the time. what is wrong with todays society. it’s all abought impressing everyone else. news flash… if you dont like me for the way i am then i dont need you as a friend

This show has an interesting premise but I think it would be more interesting if a regular looking woman was in the lead. I think that men are more shallow and superficial than women so it not uncommon to see a beautiful woman with an unattractive man.
The vast of majority of people in this country do not have perfect white teeth and flat abs so it would be interesting to see if this show does well.

Here’s an idea, how about taking all those “average size” people (by average size I mean people who actually wear larger size clothing),and put them on an actual show, not “reality” based show just a regular show. A drama or comedy would be nice. Oh, wait, tv executives don’t want that stuff on tv because seeing anyone on tv that is over size 2 and doesn’t have any sort of disorder doesn’t make for good viewing and the decision makers know what is best for the viewers.

  • Kimberly

Overweight does not=average looking. There are many overweight people who are extremely attractive–men and women. And there are plenty of thin people who are average or ugly.

  • j

by pointing out the big fat obnoxious fiance show I was not relating that this average joe show would be about fat people. The point is that ‘Average Joe’ ran for a few seasons on NBC. The ‘Joes’ were not fat. But this has been done. Surely there are some creative thinking people who can come up with a concept that has not been done to death or been done already in Europe? If we don’t have these people anymore we are in a sad state.

  • chris

Hey, I’m a big chubby white gal, where do I sign up?

  • katherine chevrette

How do you see if you can get on the show? I’m a beatiful “average” woman!

  • Kevin J

Too bad most of America isn’t really interested in watching ‘average-looking’ people date on TV and Hollywood realizes it. What it will end up being is a train wreck that people will watch for the disaster and sideshow aspects. Brilliant because people will watch, sad because it will be exploitative just like the rest of ‘reality’ shows.

  • Mm

    newsflash, average doesn’t mean fat.
and i think we all know this show will tank beucase whether we admit it or not, no one likes to look at unattractive things or people.
Studies have stown (from birth!) that infants are drawn to stare at more attractive people longer than those who are unattractive. this is very much innate, not as “learned” as unattractive or fat people would like to believe!

    • KELLI

I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU LOOK LIKE AND AN ATTITUDE LIKE THAT MAKES YOU VERY UNATTRACTIVE. NOT SO MUCH WHATS ON THE OUTSIDE BUT THE INSIDE. YOUR PERSONALITY CAN MAKE YOU UGLY EVEN IF YOU ARE GORGEOUS BY TODAYS STANDARDS. THEREFORE GOOD LUCK TO YOU WITH A SHALLOW ATTITUDE LIKE YOURS

  • Sassy

To the people who think that an ethnic person can’t carry a show shame on you!!!!! We should be so far past these types of comments, just look at our President. It is time to shake things up at some of these networks, how would you know what anyone would watch unless you put it on the air. You can’t speculate on things like that, you just have to go for it, the people may surprise you.
