The Associated Press is reporting that a Malawi court delayed until this Friday a ruling on Madonna’s attempt to adopt a second child from the African country. The decision came the same day as a press conference in the capital city, Lilongwe, by a group of non-governmental organizations accusing Madonna of using her wealth and influence to fast-track the adoption process; one official called her a "bully." After her visit to the Malawian courtroom, the pop star visited the day care center built by her charity. She was accompanied by her 12-year-old daughter Lourdes, 8-year-old son Rocco, and 3-year-old Malawian son David, whose adoption Madonna finalized last year.

Anyone who says Madonna’s stealing Mercy James is an idiot. The toddler’s name has been bounced around the Madonnasphere for the last TWO years. So clearly, she’s going forth with the adoption the right way. For any charity organization to say she shouldn’t adopt Mercy, that’s just silly. I mean, hello. Like she’ll do harm to the kid. And M’s shown everyone that she’s a lady of her word. She said she would bring David back to Malawi – and she did.

You have to be kidding that woman should not be allowed to adopt! She is unfit fully – an aged woman, having flings, divorced because she cannot keep her zipper up, no what will the quality of life be like any better? It is obvious that it is her name and money which is allowing the adoption. There may be other contenders who will watch over her children rather than the nanny world. This is more publicity for her that is all.
Mercy James would have a privileged life with Madonna. There is the issue of language barrier since the girl is 4 now and the grandmother still wants her.
In the states, if you’re 50 or older, normally they do not allow you to adopt, considering you too old.
I wonder if they will deny her the adoption?
If you think that Madonna is unfit, perhaps you should open your pocket book and adopt one instead….
So where was the grandma for the past 4 years??? That grandma is being pushed by people who don’t want this adoption to go through. Mercy’s family hasn’t wanted her for 4 years, now that someone else wants her all the sudden they care? Hypocrites, leave it alone and mind your own business. This kid’s going to have a privledged life and a loving home, quit causing problems.
she kept her word only when it behooved her to do so: to go to the country and take another child.
She has not done much at all to insure that David would see of even know about his own father. The man said the poor child, HIS CHILD didn’t know who he was. What does that tell you? Madonna take sno care whatsoever to tell the child about his father, and then just dumps in at the man’s feet and says, “by the way David, this man is your father! go spend some equality time with him so I can say I took you back to see him.” These kids HAVE family and Madonna should really look into her kabbalah soul and set up financial ways for the families to care for their children. Would she rather someone take her child, never tell her child who the mother is, or have someone carefully finance the family and help them thrive and stay together? Kabbalah shabbalah.
What I don’t understand is why everyone doesn’t protest like this every time Angelina adopts another kid from an impoverished area. Why is Madonna such a target? She will love this little girl, and that’s the important thing. She makes sure her son knows where he came from, so she’ll do the same with this little girl. Why shouldn’t this little girl feel special and have a mother who will love her and care for her?
Angelina is younger, married in a stable relationship and didn’t shortcut the rules that I know of….
Madonna is recently divorced and had problems with this country last time.
She has the money to adopt 100 children and take care of them financially. I say more power to her if that is what she chooses to do. We (in the world) need more people who have the money and time to adopt all of the poor, homeless and underprivileged orphans of this world… and then maybe this world would be a better place for all, not just for some.
Go Madonna!
Atta-boy people! Let’s make sure all the poor, starving people in ALL the developing countries stay right where they are! I don’t understand why people would protest such an act of commitment and kindness… What the hell are we all coming to?
This woman, with her vast wealth, could “adopt” an entire village and thereby provide them with food, shelter, education, and protection for many years. Why does she physically NEED to own a human being? – it’s not like she will be spending a whole lot of quality time with the child.
Jake-FYI, Angelina is not married…
You must remember there is more to adoption than $$$. Madonna is extremely wealthy, its true. BUT, who cares for her children? Nannies. That is not to say that children governed by hired help are not loved by their parents. However, if you are adopting a child, you really need to create a bond. What bond will this child have with its new mother? A 50 year old single (recently divorced no less)woman, with a 22 year old boyfriend and a plethura of boy toys in the wings. Its just not exactly the ideal circumstance to adopt a child into. Is it better than being in an African orphanage? Eh… maybe. But if Madonna wants to adopt, why not adopt an entire family. Why not finance it so that the relatives can afford to care for their own children without taking them from their country? Why not finance several families? This just smells of child collecting to me.
Angelina Jolie is quoted as saying that she would never adopt from Malawi b/c their adoption laws are corrupt.
There is a reason Madonna is being criticized for these adoptions. These children are not accessories. They are human beings.
And I’m not buying this “she should be applauded b/c she’s using her vast wealth to provide these childrent with a better life” argument. Why provide only one or two children with a better life and leave millions behind to suffer? Wouldn’t it be better to take the money she’s paying for these babies and work with the Malawian govt to create better economic opportunities for the parents of these children so they won’t feel compelled to give their children away? Or create better educational opportunities for the adults and children THERE in Malawi?
I believe Madonna’s “good” intentions are going to back-fire and you’re going to have more Malawian parents abandoning their children at orphanages hoping that some rich celeb will come along.
I dont understand why people are upset at Madonna adopting a child from an impoverished nation. That child can have a life of opportunity or a life of extreme poverty and hardship and what reason would you not want that child to have a better life. Madonna isn’t somebody buying kids to do bad things to them, she’s giving them family and opportunity. And all the bs about the child should be with his family or stay in his community….Why….The child is in an orphanage so obviously the family is unwilling or unable to care for the child. And stay in the community? Why? so he can starve to death like the rest of the village? or die from diarrhea?
There are so many children in the U.S. who need good, stable, loving homes, why do people like Madonna need to go to Africa when children in her own country need help?
Madonna or Angelina… I’m sure they will make fine mothers and their children will want for nothing. Between the two of them, they ought to adopt Britney’s kids!
Why not? Just giving a 3rd world individual a chance. Why is it her responsibility to fund a government? She doing a good thing. Now stop the judgement.
If Madonna went through the regular adoption process like a normal person, then I say fine, but she doesn’t. She uses her money and influence to purchase a child. As far as any opportunity adoption may cause, think about how a child can grow up knowing that if you have money, pick your child up today. Madonna is not a role model, other than for greed and being selfserving.
Madonna is from a Third World country. You may know of it as Detroit. Why doesn’t she adopt some child stuck in the hell of the foster care system here?
I’m sick of these rich stars going all over the world when there is real suffering in their back yards. (OK, so Angelina was in Cambodia actually working when she first got the jones, so I can forgive her for Maddox.) I was disappointed in Oprah for going overseas to open her school, saying it was too hard to do it here in the US (if anyone could, she could; the charter laws are quite lax here in Michigan) and then it turns out they hire an abusive staffer. Great. How is that any better than a US school?
“Atta-boy people! Let’s make sure all the poor, starving people in ALL the developing countries stay right where they are! I don’t understand why people would protest such an act of commitment and kindness… What the hell are we all coming to?”
It all comes down to a peoples’ pride in their identity.
Taken to a reductionist extreme some members of a community would rather have a child starve rather than escape the shared fate of his or her people, because the latter outcome would threaten the identity of that people.
It’s the old “live free or die” argument.
Most of you people are acting really silly. What does it really matter the country of origin that an impoverished child comes from? We are all of the same race – the human race. I don’t believe celebrities pick one country’s children over another country’s children simply for publicity purposes. Whatever their reasons for adopting a child, may God bless them for their generousity and may that be an example for others. Besides, if it wasn’t for all of us “average people” squawking about the behavior of celebrities – they’d have no publicity at all and the children they choose to adopt wouldn’t really be an issue.
Maybe each of us should look to ourselves to determine what can be done about the poor living in our own country before we criticize those who look to offer some relief to those in foreign countries.
Remember, if you are not part of the solution then you are part of the problem.
God bless you all.
Madonna has worked all her adult life, had an independent vision of her own identity, pursued it, and made a lot of money. Why would this be called “selfish” or “greedy”? Now she is able to give a decent life to a child and would like to. If she has the money to shorten the process so that the child gets more quickly in the critical infant years into the new family, and she is willing to spend for this purpose, hooray! Why must some people see some hideous motive in everything? Madonna has had a successful career and is now a deferred nurturer. She is not doing this for display. Give her a break and give her the child, and let them live happily ever after. It’s the government, agencies and lawyers who prolong the legal proceedings – yes, they should conduct due diligence into Madonna’s home situation and ability to care for the child, but is this hidden?
Madonna is from Bay City..not Detroit. Get it right.
Hey Katie… Nice collection of sun-shiny cliche’s and feel-good one-liners. I think most people are upset because these super-rich jerks look like they are competing with one another to see who can collect the most third-world children like action figures or barbie dolls. Like acquiring your top-of-the-line Prada bag, not everyone can afford to travel overseas and adopt a kid from the worst hell hole on the planet. It’s their misdirected and skewed red badge of courage, if you will. And why Malawi, instead of Mexico or a ghetto in Philadelphia? Because it’s trendy, now that Brangelina have started their collection of third-world kids.
Once again, Steve, why does it matter so much to you what country’s children get adopted? If it wasn’t for your fretting over ‘celebrities’ adopting ‘prada-type’ babies, they would have no publicity whatsoever. So why don’t you just ignore it, instead of giving them publicity through your outrage at the fact that they’re providing a decent life to another human being? Whether it comes from greed, arrogance, self-centerdness, or truly from the heart – what does it matter as long as a human life is being improved? If I ever struck it rich, adopting unfortunate children would be first on my agenda, as well, after having 5 children of my own – and it would have nothing to do with the publicity.
I need the blood of young African babies to keep me young. I drink an ounce a week. U will live forever!!
You don’t have to be rich to adopt from another country. I’ve adopted two children from Africa. I am by no means rich.
There might be children in this country in need of a better home, but if you haven’t been to a third world nation you have not yet seen poverty. When anorexic looking children wearing rags and no shoes sleep on the streets and ask you for food, you realize that in the US even the poor are wealthy.
Because of AIDS there are so many orphaned children living on the streets in Africa.
Madonna is doing a good thing. Who wouldn’t want to be adopted by her. This child will go to any college that she/he can get accepted to, have any kind of lessons she/he wants to have, and will have the best medical attention. Her parenting has never been an issue, in fact it is my understanding that she is an excellent mother.
People suggesting that Madonna should adopt domestically should be aware that recent changes to the laws prevent US citizens who live abroad from adopting domestically. Many would prefer to do so, but are no longer allowed, leaving international adoption the only option.
Because she has money she can buy adoption, she should be arrested for child trafficking
