An early cut of Bruno, the new comedy from Borat creator Sacha Baron Cohen that opens July 10, has earned a preliminary NC-17 rating, The Wrap is reporting and EW has confirmed. The movie apparently received the adults-only rating due to its graphic sexual content. An MPAA spokesperson would say only that ratings assignments are a multi-step endeavor and that "filmmakers, if they choose, can make cuts [after a preliminary ruling] to get the rating they want. And there’s also an appeals process." A spokesman for the film’s studio, Universal, said simply that "the process of rating Bruno is only in its earliest stages and the film has not yet been rated."

Very nice!
WOW! Its that bad?
It’s always both amusing and sad that extremely violent movies receive PG ratings, but movies that have nudity or sexual references are given more restrictive ratings. I’m sure the fact that the character Bruno is gay adds to the film’s “unsuitableness” for anyone under the age of 17. If we show a naked gay character to 16 year-olds, they are going to be scarred for life – it’s better we let them entertain themselves by watching people being slaughtered…
I am surprised this only got a ‘G’ rating:

I don’t care if this movie was rated G. I wouldn’t see this piece of $hit, complete waste of time. Borat was the worse movie of all time and Sascha Baron Cohen is a no talent hack.
I’m guessing you are one of the people Cohen humiliated in Borat.
(And since you know what the “worse [sic] movie of all time” is, can you enlighten us with your pick for best movie of all time?)
NC-17 will hurt the movie’s box office potential, but will be a hell of a good time for all of us who are of age! Bruno’s gonna be hilarious.
There’s no way the studio will release it as NC-17. They’ll find a way to trim it down to the R rating.
It will get changed. I wont see it. Borat sucked. Sorry. Not funny. At all
Only in America do we put all these ridiculous rules on sex! hahahaha… Haters, say what you will, this is stupid, especially if its based on the gay factor, because if it were female nudity, different story…
Well, that just makes me want to see it even more.
how ignorant do you have to be to not see the humor in Borat….he did all those scenes in one take because the people all beleived he was a real person…for anyone to be able to stay in character that long is amazing and thats without being funny , which Borat was and im sure Bruno will be… Just do not shrink me gypsy lady
I don’t get the people who are on the hate-Borat bandwagon. Sure, I can understandt how the humor (and anti-semitism) might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but no one can deny or diminish the biting, unflinching social commentary of the film; especially in regards to the sexism, racism, elitism, ethnocentrism, homophobia, and yes even anti-semitism that goes on without our knowledge or objection in our own backyards. I am an avid fan of Da Ali G Show and Borat, and am eagerly awaiting the Bruno venture, regardless of rating. And why are we so hung up on sex (in a movie explicitly intended for adults no less, who more likely than not have engaged in the act themselves) but merely shrug of violence in all its increasingly explicit and gratuitous permeatations?

I think I might be the only person who saw the shortened headline of “Bruno: Headed for an NC-17?” and thought it could be a DWTS-themed post about Bruno Tonioli, whose language contains more innuendo than you can shake a “throbbing red hot poker” at. Sorry to intrude my DWTS love into your Sacha Baron Cohen discussion!
Some day I’ll have to see Borat, and I do hope that the sexuality of SBC’s character in this movie didn’t affect the rating.
I hope they don’t have to trim too much; I want to see it all its vulgar hilarity.
Well said, chocolate face!
I’m sure there will be an unrated DVD version, so we’ll eventually get to see what the ratings board deemed too naughty for the delicate innocence of 16 year-olds’ minds…
hahaha katja nope u werent the only one! and boy am i glad i was wrong. it would probly be best to cut soem scnes and then hv an unrated dvd later otherwsie theyll lose their audience.
I recommend the documentary “This film is not yet rated” for anyone who wants to understand the movie rating system. Some aspects are as scary as the exorcist.
The MPAA is stupid enough to hand out PG13 ratings to films that really should have earned an R rating. I bet the director and/or studio just resubmits the exact same film later and gets an R anyway. It won’t be the first time directors/studios have pulled the wool over the MPAA’s eyes. That’s fine. I won’t be in attendance. I let a friend talk me into seeing the Borat movie with them and never again will that happen. I’m not easily impressed by outlandish filth.
People really need to learn the process before they start commenting. This isn’t news because the movie hasn’t even been given a preliminary rating yet. This is part of the process every movie goes through. It will be officially submitted and probably get an R. If it doesn’t, changes will be made to get an R or it will be released with an NC-17. What will be interesting is finding out which scenes they object to. If it turns out to be gay-oriented sex scenes there will be quite an outcry that would likely sound the death knoll for the current ratings system.
Hey matt2,… Yeah whatever!
