'The Chopping Block': NBC pulls the plug on cooking show

NBC announced its new cooking reality competition The Chopping Block will be pulled from the schedule, effective immediately, according to Variety. The series debuted March 11 to 3.8 million viewers and, by its most recent episode this past Wednesday, had dropped 32 percent to 2.6 million viewers. Block‘s Wednesday at 9 p.m. timeslot will be filled by repeats of Law & Order: Criminal Intent (which currently airs new episodes on sister-cable network USA) instead. NBC said it hopes to bring the show back at a later date.

NBC, what a joke. I love that they don’t even have something to backfill the timeslot with! So they’re plugging L&O in again. What the heck is this “network” going to do when they finally wig out and decide to actually cancel the Law & Order series?? (Oh, right – maybe they’ll add more hours of Jay Leno.)

I really wished that NBC would have given me time to find the show. I didn’t know it was on the air and they have already pulled the show. Shouldn’t they at least give a show a fair chance?

I was interested in this show when it debuted because I was hoping it would be along the lines of Top Chef, but quickly discovered that it was more Hell’s Kitchen. Forget about it. Any chef who gets off on belittling people is beyond ridiculous.

You’re definitely right — this was more “Hell’s Kitchen” and less “Top Chef.” Note to producers making cooking shows: IT’S ALL ABOUT THE FOOD. We food fans DO NOT want to see people who can’t cook. We want to be wowed by creativity in the kitchen. That’s what makes “Top Chef” so much fun. I watch “Hell’s Kitchen” because I think Ramsey is hilarious, but I also know that I’m watching what is essentially a cartoon. They give him lousy chefs so he can scream at them. “Drama,” as far as I’m concerned, is irrelevant on these shows if it always derives from the fact that the cooks can’t prepare simple meals. NBC should have used its expansive resources to find good chefs for its show, but they didn’t, and it was doomed from the beginning.

Watching crap float in the toilet is more interesting and has a better plot than anything NBC airs (excluding 30 Rock and The Office).
They’re the worst network on television, and their idea of bringing in new viewers is to put on yet another cop drama (Southland). Once that fails, and it will, they’ll add another medical drama which will also fail, and then we’ll be given another forensic drama… that’s all they do these days. Medical, Cop, and Forensic. Very original.
NBC’s drama’s are now just as bad as ABC’s comedies. R.I.P. NBC.

Aww man. I kinda liked it.

Fine with me, since the open timeslot might increase Chuck’s chances for renewal!

The ratings for this show were horrible. It was getting lower ratings than basic cable.

Actually, USA isn’t airing new episodes of Law & Order Criminal Intent until next month so this article was a little misleading.

Since “Reality” equals staged, I am glad to see the show cancelled. Instead, produce more “Real” food shows like the Food Channel! Can’t argue against success!!!

NBC still has Chuck, Heroes and Life(and Medium I guess, fun to watch, but I haven’t reinvested my time especially since I’m giving Castle a shot). Oddly enough, I don’t watch 30 Rock or the Office, apparently their biggest draws. I never could get into them. I look at this cancellation from this perspective, it’ll give the shows we like (for me, Chuck, Heroes and Life) a better shot at being renewed. Plus, we get the added benefit of one less reality show. Hooray!!!

Also, GO KINGS!!! (pretty good so far, give it a shot if you haven’t watched it yet)

  • Reifrak

NBC is airing one of the best drama series of the year, KINGS. Watch it on Sunday, 8 p.m.. Then you won’t say anymore that NBC can’t do wonderful drama series.

    I gave it a chance..about 5 min. worth. Boring! Glad it’s gone.

I liked the show. I am friends with Shari and Dean in real life and this was so exciting for them. I am very disappointed.
