Anne Hathaway to play Judy Garland on both stage and screen

Categories: Books, Movie Biz, Movies, Stage

Oscar-nominated actress Anne Hathaway will play Judy Garland in stage and screen adaptations of Gerald Clarke’s 2001 biography Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland for the Weinstein Company. According to a statement released by the Weinstein Co. today, Clarke’s book "portrays the dramatic highs and lows of the cultural icon’s life — from her tumultuous early years as a child performer to her tragic last days." The Weinstein Co. has optioned both the stage and film rights, but there is no start date yet for either production, nor is there a director or writer.

Simultaneously commissioning stage and screen adaptations with the same star? Sounds cool, and Hathaway certainly has the chops (and voice!) to pull it off.

all i can say is YAY!!! would love to see a bit of what was going on during The Wizard of Oz. imagine: anne portraying Judy portraying dorothy. now there is a mind bender.

  • AA

    Very cool.

    And the Oscar goes to…

  • Zach

Well, good for her – this could be her Oscar. But though I haven’t seen it, wasn’t the TV movie with Judy Davis good enough and extensive enough to cover Garland’s life story??

  • Cindy

    VERY cool.

  • AliK

Good for her. We know she can sing (Ella Enchanted, the Oscars), so I wonder how much she’ll be able to sound like Judy?

  • Sally in Chicago

Good choice, but Judy Davis did it Garland a couple of years ago on ABC and she killed.

David Schwimmer as Vincente Minelli and Vince Vaughan as Sid Luft. You heard it here first.

Looks like a Tony and another Oscar nomination are in Hathaway’s near future.

Both Judy Davis & Tammy Blanchard won Emmys for their spot on performances as the adult and teen versions of the late Judy Garland. Good luck to Anne Hathaway: She will have to be out of this world phenomenal to top those actresses interpretations of the legend.

  • MK

    Amen! Judy Davis was BRILLIANT.

  • mells

Why?! Judy Davis for the win! She was truly amazing! When I was watching Judy Davis, I actually forgot it was an actress playing Judy Garland. I like Anne Hathaway but I don’t think she needs to play Judy.

  • graeme

Well, just hand Hathaway the Oscar now. The Academy will eat this up.

I’m with everyone else: Judy Davis and Tammy Blanchard were AWESOME! This is an UNNECESSARY retelling of the story, especially since the television movie was based on Lorna Luft’s book. Who knows better than Judy’s own daughter?!

  • peaches

I heart Hathaway but can we please leave Judy alone!?! Davis killed it a few years back so this seems redundant.

  • Lena

Terrible idea. She kinda sorta looks like Liza, so they’re casting her as Judy?

  • Marnie

Omg i love how everyone else remembers Judy Davis and Tammy Blanchard from the abc movie. That was such an amazing movie. I cant see how anyone can top Judy Davis.

I think Alyssa Milano should play Judy Garland. She looks more like her than Anne Hathaway.

  • Buffy Freak

Alyssa Milano??? Come on! What acting has she done that makes you think she could pull this off? And yes, Judy Davis and Tammy Blanchard were amazing but many people have had more than one movie about their life.

  • Jill

Ugh, NO! i love judy garland to death and i just don’t think anne hathaway can do her justice. she had such a unique voice. it’s clear that anne is a good singer, but she sounds NOTHING like judy.

Why not cast Tammy Blanchard? Her Emmy winning performance in “Me and My Shadows” was nothing short of brilliant.
However, Anne proved she has the chops for drama in “Rachel Getting Married” so I think if she was cast, she will hit it out of the park.

Anne is a good actress, but Judy Garland was 4′11″ tall and Anne Hathaway is around 5′9″ or more. This is not great typecasting in my book!

  • Larry

Anne Hathaway has a Judy look. Anne is a very good actress. I agree, Anne is a little too tall. Part of what made Judy Garland so amazing was all that talent and personality was just bursting out of a this little bitty body. This should be fun to watch.

  • smickly

Edith Piaf was 4′8″ and Marion Cotillard is 5′7″ so I hardly think
height is an issue, and Cotillard more than pulled off the role, altho
    she wasn’t doing the singing

  • Ben

i love anne, and i think she will do an amazing job, although she does look like a young pre-cabaret liza, i think with the right makeup she can be judy, however i hope they use recordings of garland, no one will ever even get close

  • Robert Waters

I think Hathaway might be able to pull it off, she is a very capable actress. However, it would be a horrible mistake to let her do the singing. No one could possibly measure up to Judy Garland’s amazing voice. I do hope they rethink that one. Garland’s trademark voice was what it was all about.

  • AH

I think Anne could do Judy Garland justice as long as they dub Anne’s voice with Judy’s. It won’t be as believable and won’t be a full tribute to Judy, like Tammy Blanchard and Judy Davis did.

  • A.Hayes

I think Tammy Blanchard would be wonderful(now a few years older) as Judy in her 20s-30s b/c she does have a remarkable resemblence to Judy Garland and she already prooved she can pull the role off. also, I think it would interesting to see Tammy as Judy again from a different perspective. Ive read the Clark bio of Garland and it does have the potential to be a good film–as long as the right people were to play the leading characters and the right director(s) and writers were apart of the production– as well as some editing of some unnecessary parts of the book. In edition, this film/stage project, wether Hathaway or Blanchared would play Judy Garland, the film should be used as a TRIBUTE to Garland’s life, talent, and accompleshments! NOT a project used to make money off of Graland’s name OR just to help Hathaway’s career! It’s NOT fair to Judy.. she went through enough in life! And if that is what this film is to be used for, the people apart of it should be ASHAMED of themselves!
