'Twilight': 'Orphanage' helmer Juan Antonio Bayona to direct 'Eclipse'

Tags:

Summit Entertainment has selected Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona to direct the third Twilight film, Eclipse, Variety is reporting. Summit has not confirmed the hire. Bayona is not well-known to American audiences, but he directed the highly acclaimed Spanish horror film The Orphanage, which was released in early 2008. He’s also a protege of Hellboy director Guillermo Del Toro, who’s now directing The Hobbit. Bayona scored the gig over other competitors, including Drew Barrymore, who recently made her directing debut with the roller derby film Whip It!, which is now in post-production. Chris Weitz is currently directing the second Twilight film, New Moon. Catherine Hardwicke directed the original, which has now grossed $372 million worldwide.

VIVA ESPAÑA Y SU GRAN TALENTO!
I think it’s great to know such a talented director is going to direct Eclipse. I recommend strongly to everyone who hasn¡t watched The Orphanague to do it. It’s an excellent horror drama film, very emotional, intense and deep, It scared me, but also It almost made cried. It’s a very powerfil story of love and lost.
SO good fot the Twilight Cast to be working with this guy. I am sure we all watch a terrific result next year.

Awesome. Eclipse is my favorite book of the series, so I’m really looking forward to the movie!

Since I’m currently reading Eclipse, I’m intrigued by the choice. We all know how well Alfonso Cuarón took to the third Harry Potter. So, if Bayona can bring even half of the flair Cuarón did, I’ll be a happy camper.

A little disappointed in this choice. Eclipse is not a horror film. From the way everyone is talking about this director it looks like Summit is trying to make it a horror film. It seems the Bella/Edward story is going to twisted into some horror cliche. Very disappointed they went with this director.

The Orphanage was a great movie! It was more of a thriller than a horror movie, so I think he will do a great job with Eclipse. Remember people, there are vampires and werewolves in Eclipse. It is not just a love story. I’m sure that Edward and Bella will still be making out enough for all of you swooners.

Cool…excited to see what he will do with Eclipse. It is my favorite book in the series. I just hope the script is better written and that Summit will invest more money in it.

Oooooooooo!!! I was hoping it would end up being an Alfonso Cuarón or Guillermo del Toro type! I was even thinking how great the Harry Potter films are BECAUSE they’ve had multiple interesting directors taking a shot at the different stories. Each Twilight book is so unique you almost need a different storyteller each time…they’re not quite Lord of the Rings in terms of similarity…all the characters grow so much that it kind of makes sense to have different directorial pints of view.
Both Juan and del Toro are extraordinary directors who find the emotional center of any film they do, whether its pretense is horror or comic books. The Orphanage was more of an emotional thriller than a straight up horror film. Just like Pan’s Labyrinth. I think he is perfect.

To anyone who has read the Twilight Saga (including myself) this should be taken as great news! Eclipse is my favorite book out of the series and I have been secretly hoping it would fall into capable hands. I would’ve never thought in a million years it would’ve been hands that were THIS capable. The actors and crew should be thanking their lucky stars that they’ll have the opportunity to work with caliber of talent.

Great news. The Orphanage looks really good and creepy.

That is great new but when are they switching the character Bella? There must be another pale, browned hair girl who can actually act with emotions.

  • Dea

I wish people would stop bagging out Bella, if you understand the book you will notice that Bella is a shy, reserved, not comfortable in her own skin kind of person which I think Kirsten does well, I’m not fan of Kirsten she needs some lessons on media but she does Bella well..

Eclipse is my most favorite book in the TWILIGHT Saga, and with the very exciting, intriguing and action-packed storyline this 3rd book presents (*m soo looking forward to see the different groups of vampires like d Mexican vamps who transformed Jasper & Victoria’s newborn army; more so that “tent” Jacob-Bella-Edward scenes*), i hope SUMMIT would truly hire the right person to direct it. I’ve seen and so much been moved by Pan’s Labyrinth and i’ve always been intrigued by d movie “The Orphanage”, so after learning that its director who’s a protege’ of del Toro’s is being eyed to be given the ” TWILIGHT baton”, the more m interested in watching it.
imho TWILIGHT Saga is already a must read literary piece… more so the MUST-SEE movie franchise there is especially with the colorful list of directors that Summit Ent. are considering in ‘manning’ these soon-to-be literary pieces-coming-to-life classics!
