D.L. Hughley to take new role at CNN

Categories: Television

D.L. Hughley’s comedy show on CNN, D.L. Hughley Breaks the News, is ending as the comedian assumes new responsibilities for the cable channel, CNN announced on Thursday. In a statement, the network said, "D.L. approached CNN about being permanently based in Los Angeles, where hisfamily lives. To accommodate this, we agreed upon a new role where he will be acontributor for the network based in Los Angeles. We are eager to continue ourrelationship with D.L., who is a tremendous talent and a valued colleague." No finale date has been set, but the show, which debuted last fall, will continue airing through this month.

It just didn’t work from the first night. I’m glad both sides are cutting their losses. I doubt we’ll see him on CNN for long after his show ends. I remember they brought Walter Cronkite on with great fanfare YEARS ago and said he would be a contributor-at-large or some such nonsense, but he didn’t last for long.
This was as big a disaster as when FoxNews tried to do a version of The Daily Show. Come on, TV outlets! If you’re going to truly venture outside your comfort zone, bring in people who can truly follow through with something authentically outside the comfort zone. D.L. Hughley was not the guy for this show! If you really wanted to do it right, you should’ve shelled out the dollars for Chris Rock.

Hughley would have fared better on MSNBC. It was obvious from the onset that the show didn’t fit. With MSNBC ratings on the rise along with liberal commentary, Hughley “MIGHT” have stood a chance. No one at CNN has comedic flare, whereas Olbermann and Maddow both have the ability to get laughs. Hughley’s comedy can be funny and relevant, but his obvious dogmatic ideals would have been better suited at an unapologetically liberal network like MSNBC.

I liked the show. I thought Hughley was original and likeable. Too bad. I hope it works out for him. It was a good premise.

Hmmm, who is D. L. Hughley? And CNN, are they still on the air? I think they used to be the first for news, now they’re just last period. So who cares.

  • sam

I love DL and he can be really funny–unfortunately, not on this show. He always seemed very uncomfortable. I agree that MSNBC would be a better fit for him.

It never ceases to amaze me how so-called entertainers (and faux news journalists) are allowed to compare some people to Nazis (which in effect compares them with racial and religious zealot killers), and are not only allowed to get away with it but are found to be humorous. Hughley compares the RNC to Nazi Germany and not one whit of notice from the media. I dare guess that if someone with a national platform compared Hughley to a boot-cleaning slave or another example of black ignorance that person would be terminated, ridiculed, held to scorn and the likes of Al Sharpton would lead the parade. CNN gave up being a news organization when it promoted Larry King as an interviewer and not the celebrity softball tosser that he has been since his days in Miami radio. Why is it that when a liberal says something insulting the media takes no notice, but when anyone else makes a comment or a “joke”, it’s a social injustice? I think the answer is obvious.

His interview with RNC head Michael Steele was very interesting AND it made news as Steele later apologized to Rush Limbaugh for comments he made to Hughley. Nice job on that one, D.L.!

I love DL Hughley and will hate to see him leave the cable. Not much else on CNN for an African American to watch. Most of the cable shows have gone “White.” No more Cosby show, Fresh Price, Good times. All that left are crude off color shows dumbed down to the level of Jerry Springer. White America, you are driving the country in the wrong direction. At least Dl had the sense to speak out unlike the mealy mouth Pablum drivling cable anchor that should have seen this financial mess coming just as they allowed 911 and the Iraq war to happen by not calling Bush out!

  • swami

No mention of his ridiculous “the RNC literally looked like Nazi Germany” comment? In a better world, that would have gotten him fired immediately.

  • MikeH

“We are eager to continue our relationship with D.L., who is a tremendous talent and a valued colleague.” Sure, anyone who calls Republicans a bunch of Nazis is sure to be welcomed at CNN. CNN can go to hell.

  • kath

So Hughley is a victim of the Obamaconomy…is that what you’re trying to say EW?

  • KG

I wouldn’t watch D.L. Hughley Breaks the News because of all the negative publicity and comments, but I decided to sit down and watch the episode that aired on February 28, 2009. I have to say that I really enjoyed it. If the earlier shows were awkward I think D.L. Hughley finally found his stride which makes it unfortunate that his show is ending now. I hope another network such as MSNBC will pick it up. I will definitely watch it on a regular basis if it continues to be as good as last week’s show.

  • JS

DL Hughley was only brought in by CNN to cater to the ignorant masses who elected the Obamination, Marxist mad man to the Presidency. He is the black equivalent to the braying jackass of Wolf Blitzer! He should have never been put on the air!

  • Reggie

J.S. You may not like your President but guess what deal with four the next four years, I had to for the last 8. May your next four years be your best :)

  • GM2009

Too bad. I didn’t like this show at first but I thought it was getting pretty good.

  • Nick

This has NOTHING to do with the Obama-economy…perhaps the BUSH’S FAILING ECONOMY THAT OBAMA INHERITED. “UH, HELLO!!!!!???” Anyway, the show was probably low in the ratings and they pulled it.

  • Joe Scardo

D.L Hughley Breaks the News is the only CNN program that I watch regularly.

  • Gerry

We have not seen anyone with more talent, wit. He could match anything said to him. America deserves and needs to hear him and his interviews. Our most favorite.

Oh Thank God!!! What a joke this guy was.CNN finally came to their senses. This guy really brought down the CNN wow factor and really brought in to question the journalistic qualities that CNN embraces. Mr Down Low Hughley was a complete unintelligent moron who proved he would compromise any proposed principles just to get a guest to come on his pathetic show. While the guest was there in the studio with him, he would shower them with blessings and fall short from crawling knee deep up into, well you know, and then would stab them in the back the second they left the studio. Case in point is when DLH interviewed disgraced Illinois Governor Ron Blagojevich.DLH went on and on about how he was set up and how unjust people were being to him and how people were out to get him. He went on to speak about and attest to the EX governor’s character for 5 minutes even after all the facts and some of the tapes were released that justified the senate’s removal from office. Compton here he comes!!

  • RSC In Washington DC

Continuation from my post below – - There is little question in my mind had the EX governor nominated a non African American, the pleasantries wouldn’t have been so flowing and even I would go so far as to say he probably wouldn’t have appeared on the show. And the final example where I completely lost all respect in CNN’s judgment in this thug on the air in the first place is when he interviewed former Bush Press Secretary Ari Fleischer. Again, Mr. Down Low Hughley couldn’t have crawled in any deeper, again proving he has zero journalist abilities, he went on and on with the flatteries and the “interview” had zero substance.. And we all know Mr Down Low’s view on the Republican’s, not that it’s necessarily incorrect, as I too am a democrat, however, he compromised any integrity he may have had by not asking this guy anything substantive, or quite frankly entertaining. Good Job CNN!!!!! I’m glad CNN is sending this guy back where he belongs,Compton California.

  • Jay O’Three

    D. L. Hughley is hilarious! His is the only CNN show that any teens or twenty-somethings in this neck of the woods (Southern California) ever watch. Please don’t silence this unique voice.

  • Debbie

DL is so funny. My 3 teens are FINALLY interested in the news. We have learned alot from listening to our young. They are the ones who made a change and placed Obama in office. HOORAY for DL. I am going to hate to see him go off the air. :(

  • electricspacegirl

It looks to me like the GOP rich who own the media didn’t like DL’s truthful “assaults” on the Republican Party. That’s unfortunate, but so expected. You speak out on what’s really going on, and you get silenced.

  • MargaretO

Just when his show was getting really good. It started off rough, but boy did he learn quickly and turned it into a really good show. Last nights show with Frank Schaeffer was excellent.
I’m sorry to see it go, he was really getting some good guests and even when he interviewed the right, he was very respectful. He had Ron Paul on last night and it was a real nice interview.
CNN, I hope you think more about this and continue his show from LA.

  • Sam

Just when people including myself was beginning to enjoy this show,CNN decided to pull the plug.D.L.,I just want you to know you brought a new dimension to talk show.I really will miss you.Good luck on your next assignment.

  • Mike Honari

I do not know who decide to put this guy on the air. I guess we have to expect this from CNN. This comic is a left wing democrat who likes to say Republicans are not human and repeats it several times on the air. I took offense to his comments and I demand apology from him and CNN. Why don’t you put someone on the air who knows what his talking about. He should go and continue play his B movies like before.

  • ELizabeth Orozco

I saw part of the show on Sunday with a guy who was talking about the Republican party and religion, I have thought the same thing so long. The religious are a bunch of judgemental people who have the nerve to tell others they are not as good and the Republican Party is so out of date who does the same thing. I mean if you have Ann Coulter or Rush Limbaugh speaking for you that tells how crazy they are. I am a Chrisiian and am so disappointed with religion and I do not like the Republican party at all. He spoke the truth and I have so much respect for this show now. It is the first totally honest truth I have heard in such a long time. By the way, Obama is great!

  • Mike Honari

Hay stupid, Iranians are NOT ARABS, Go and learn before you make fool of yourself.

  • kdm

It’s ironic that people on both “sides” don’t like DL. Some posters said he was just a pawn of the left, and some said he was a pawn of the right. I guess he was doing something right as a journalist! I also wonder about the age of the people complaining he wasn’t funny. I suspect they are older and just don’t “get” a younger sense of humor (and he’s not even that young!). There seems to be a huge generational gap when it comes to humor and the quick understated way of relating to people. Just a thought.
