The CW has greenlit its planned reincarnation of Melrose Place (as EW’s Michael Ausiello previously reported) and brought on Oscar winner Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth) to direct a pilot, according to The Hollywood Reporter. As it happens, Guggenheim is married to Elisabeth Shue, whose brother Andrew Shue starred on the original Melrose Place in the 1990s. Guggenheim has experience directing TV series like Party of Five, Deadwood, and 24, and he was the man behind the camera for the pilot of The Unit.

Naomi Watts joins new Woody Allen movie
Naomi Watts has joined Woody Allen’s next film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Plot details of the forthcoming project are under wraps, as is the case with most of Allen’s movies. Watts will star opposite Josh Brolin and Anthony Hopkins. Slumdog Millionaire breakout Freida Pinto revealed on Monday that she’ll have a part in the film, too. The as-yet-untitled movie will shoot in London this summer.
Sean Penn to play Ambassador Joseph Wilson in 'Fair Game'?
Two-time Academy Award winner Sean Penn is in talks to play Ambassador Joseph Wilson, the husband of outed CIA agent Valerie Plame Wilson, in Fair Game, director Doug Liman’s movie version of the scandal that rocked Washington, D.C., during the George W. Bush Administration, Variety reports. Naomi Watts has been cast as Wilson, on whose memoir the film will be based. Watts and Penn previously starred together in 21 Grams.
Charles Barkley pleads guilty to DUI, will serve jail time
Basketball star and NBA television host Charles Barkley is headed to jail after pleading guilty to two counts of driving under the influence, TMZ reports. Barkley also pleaded "responsible" for running a stop sign during the Dec. 31, 2008, incident in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was fined $2,000 and sentenced to 10 days in jail, but will only have to serve five days if he completes an alcohol education program. Barkley took time off from his duties as a basketball analyst on TNT following the incident; he returned last week, issuing an on-air apology for his actions, saying the DUI was "100 percent my fault."
Peter Chernin to step down as News Corp. president
Peter Chernin, the man charged with overseeing the vast movie and television empire of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, is stepping down from his position as company president, The Los Angeles Times is reporting. Chernin, 57, is seen as a widely admired ambassador for News Corp. in the business and entertainment communities. After stepping down, he is expected to pursue a TV and movie production deal at News Corp.’s Fox studios. No successor has been named.
'Slumdog Millionaire' star Freida Pinto cast in Woody Allen's next film
Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto told Meredith Vieira on Monday’s The Today Show that she will be joining Josh Brolin and Anthony Hopkins in Woody Allen’s as-yet untitled next film, due in 2010. As usual, Allen is keeping plot details under wraps, and it’s unknown whether Pinto will be the lead or a supporting character. Shooting begins this July in London, right around the time Allen’s comedy with Larry David, Whatever Works, is due in theaters. Oscar ratings up from last year's record low
Household ratings for the 81st Annual Academy Awards were up 6 percent compared to last year, according to overnight Nielsen data. Sunday night’s ABC telecast averaged a 23.3 household rating/35 share in the 56 metered U.S. markets. (We’ll find out how that translates into total viewers when Nielsen releases that number later this afternoon.) The Top 5 highest-rated markets were: New York (34.1/49), Chicago (31.2/46), Los Angeles (28.1/44), Boston (27.4/42) and Kansas City (27.1/41).

Clay Aiken confirms he's left RCA
Representatives for Clay Aiken have confirmed reports that the singer is no longer signed with his longtime label, RCA Records. "We were unable to come to terms in a recent contract negotiation and decided that it was best to move on," said the American Idol alum’s camp in a statement. Aiken signed with RCA in 2003 shortly after placing second on Idol. RCA declined to comment on the news.
'Shield' creator's pilot dropped at CBS
CBS won’t be building a home for The Shield‘s creator Shawn Ryan after all: The network has dropped Ryan’s latest project, Confessions of a Contractor, Variety reports. Based on the book of the same name, the show would have focused on an L.A. contractor and his rich clients. According to Variety, "the Confessions pickup was cast-contingent — and CBS decided not to go forward after a lead actor could not be found."
CBS picks up Adam Carolla sitcom
Just a few days after his syndicated radio show was canceled, AdamCarolla has landed a pilot deal at CBS, according to theHollywood Reporter. He’ll star in Ace inthe Hole, a multicamera comedy about a "husband and fatherwho works as a driving instructor," THR says.
