DreamWorks set to move to Disney?

Categories: Movie Biz, Movies, Television

In a surprising turn of events that is stunning Hollywood, DreamWorks was unable to lock in its distribution deal with UniversalPictures and is looking to move to Disney as early as Friday, The New York Times, Deadline Hollywood Daily, and other outlets are reporting.

The news is particularly surprising because Jeffrey Katzenberg cofounded DreamWorks in 1994 with David Geffen and Steven Spielberg in part as an antidote to his time spent as a top executive at Disney. Katzenberg now runs DreamWorks Animation (which is staying put at Paramount Pictures), but the live-action unit may well move its operations to Disney.

This action was prompted by the worldwide financial crisis, which has stunted DreamWorks’ ability to raise the $500 million it needed to match the $500 million that the Indian firm Reliance invested in DreamWorks when it initially split from Paramount Pictures last year. DreamWorks had been trying to rejigger the deal it made with Universal several months ago, which would give DreamWorks cash in addition to the right to distribute the four to six films it expects to make each year. Initially, Geffen and studio head Stacey Snider were interested in aligning with Disney, but Spielberg refused, adamant that he wanted to return to Universal, where his Amblin Entertainment is based. But Universal issued a statement late Friday morning, stating that all discussions with DreamWorks are finished. "Over the past several weeks, DreamWorks has demanded material changes to previously agreed upon terms," the release says. "It is clear that DreamWorks’ needs and Universal’s business interests are no longer in alignment. We wish them luck in their pursuit of funding and distribution of their future endeavors."

First it was news that Kellogg won’t be renewing his cereal sponsorship deal, and now this: The Baltimore Sun reports that USA Swimming voted last night to suspend the swimmer from competition for three months as punishment for the published photo that showed him smoking from a bong. The suspension means Phelps will miss a planned meet in March. USA Swimming said in a statement: "This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people." Phelps management company chimed in saying, "Michael accepts these decisions and understands their point of view….He intends to work hard to regain everyone’s trust."

Ann Curry lands first interview with octuplets' mom

Categories: Television

Looks like those new publicists have come in handy: Nadya Suleman, the infamous mother of 14 kids from Whittier, Calif., has given her first interview to NBC News’ Ann Curry. The exclusive interview will air Feb. 9 on Today and on Dateline the next night. NBC reportedly confirmed that it is not paying for the interview.

NBC just released the following excerpt from the interview with Suleman, who already had six children under age 7 before she gave birth to eight more:

Curry: "How did an only child end up with 14 children?"
Suleman: "That was always a dream of mine, to have a large family, a huge family, and … I just longed for certain connections and attachments with another person that I … I really lacked, I believe, growing up … I didn’t feel as though, when I was a child, I had much control of my environment.  I felt powerless.  And that gave me a sense of predictability.  I … reflecting back on my childhood, I know it wasn’t functional.  It was pretty … pretty dysfunctional, and whose isn’t?"

Suleman made worldwide headlines when she gave birth to octuplets last month. She finally checked out of the hospital today, though the newborns remain hospitalized.

Sundance hit 'Push: Based on a Novel by Sapphire' hits legal snag

Categories: Movies

Push: Based on a Novel by Sapphire, an award winner at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, is entangled in legal issues involving Lionsgate (which bought the movie at Sundance) and the Weinstein Co. (which belives it has the rights to distribute the picture). According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate, in what appeared tobe a pre-emptive move, filed suit against TWC on Monday, claiming the studio hasno "right, title or interest" in the film. Several hours later, TWC filed its own suit against both Lionsgate and Push’ssales agent, Cinetic Media, for breach of contract. TWC believes ithad a firm agreement with Cinetic, which, it claims, then went behind TWC’s back to make a better deal with Lionsgate. Push, from director Lee Daniels, is being promotionally supported by both Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry.
