Project Runway mentor Tim Gunn, ABC morning news co-anchor Robin Roberts, and Entertainment Weekly managing editor Jess Cagle will host the official Academy Awards pre-show, Oscars Red Carpet 2009. The three will interview stars and talk fashion and film for 30 minutes before the live program begins on ABC. The Oscars will air live on Feb. 22.

EchoStar eyeing struggling Sirius XM?
EchoStar Corp., which has been buying near-term debt owed by Sirius, may seek to acquire the struggling satellite radio company. The New York Times reports that Sirius XM has hired advisers to prepare for a possible bankruptcy filing within the next few days. With $5 billion in assets, Sirius XM’s would be the second-largest Chapter 11 filing of 2009. Service is unlikely to be interrupted, but the company may need to terminate pricey contracts with on-air talent like Howard Stern, pictured (who was paid $100 million per year) and Martha Stewart.

Wilmer Valderrama exec produces Nickelodeon show
Wilmer Valderrama, the voice of Disney Channel’s Handy Manny and the man behind MTV’s Yo Mamma, is developing a children’s show, Earth to Pablo, for Nickelodeon. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it centers on a family who finds out it’s housing a teenage space alien instead of the South American exchange student they had anticipated. Valderrama will exec produce the series with writer Philip Stark, whose credits include Valderrama’s That ’70s Show and the feature Dude, Where’s My Car?.
'Departed' scribe William Monahan to direct Myles Connor story
Oscar-winning screenwriter William Monahan (The Departed) will direct a film adaptation of the forthcoming Myles Connor memoir The Art of the Heist: Confessions of a Master Thief, Rock-and-Roller and Prodigal Son, Variety reports. The book, to be published in April, details Connor’s life as a musician and as a criminal implicated in museum robberies. Monahan will make his directorial debut guiding Keira Knightley and Colin Farrell through an adaptation of Ken Bruen’s London Boulevard, as previously reported.
Sam Raimi to produce horror remakes
Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures will scare up remakes of the Spanish horror film Anguish and the Danish frightfest Room 205, Variety reports. Both involve young women in peril. Anguish centers on two girls whose lives begin to resemble the plot of a scary movie they’re watching. Room 205, which will be rechristened The Dorm, follows a college freshman whose room is haunted.
Sam Rockwell joins Hilary Swank in 'Betty Anne Waters'
Sam Rockwell has been cast as Hilary Swank’s brother in the legal drama Betty Anne Waters. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is based on the true story of an unemployed single mother (Swank), who earns a law degree to try to save her brother from serving life in prison after he’s convicted of murder and robbery. Tony Goldwyn will direct the film, which begins shooting this month. Rockwell well then move on to play Justin Hammer in Iron Man 2. Swank will get terrorized by Jeffrey Dean Morgan in The Resident.
Michelle Obama to appear on cover of 'Vogue' magazine
First Lady Michelle Obama is set to appear on the cover of the March issue of Vogue magazine, the Washington Post reports. The photo, taken by Annie Leibovitz, shows Obama leaning on a beige sofa at the Hay-Adams Hotel, where the Obama family stayed before the inauguration. She is wearing a magenta dress by Jason Wu, who also designed her inaugural ball gown. Her right hand rests under her chin, and her left hand is folded beneath her. She is wearing a diamond. Inside, she is seen in a black dress by Narciso Rodriguez.
First ladies have been photographed for Vogue since Herbert Hoover’s wife Lou, but Obama will be just the second first lady to appear on the cover of the magazine, following Hillary Clinton.
'Chuck' star Zachary Levi in 'Chipmunks' sequel
Zachary Levi, star of the NBC action-comedy series Chuck, will star in the Alvinand the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Levi will play the cousin of Jason Lee‘s character alongside computer-animated versions of the three chipmunks, who will again be voiced by Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler, and Jesse McCartney. The sequel will also introduce the Chipmunks’ rivals, theChipettes: Brittany, Jeanette, and Eleanor.
Bob Marley family looking to license his image
Bob Marley’s family and private equity firm Hilco Consumer Capital are preparing a deal to license the reggae legend’s likeness, trademarks, and themes to apparel, food, video games, and a vast array of other products, the Wall Street Journal reports. Hilco invested some $20 million for half of House of Marley LLC, a joint venture with the Marley family, people familiar with the matter told the WSJ. The idea is to tap what is estimated to be $600million in annual worldwide sales of unlicensed Marley products. Marley Lager, aJamaican beer featuring the singer’s likeness, is one of the first priorities, with headphones, snowboards, posters, screensavers, coffee and many other products also under consideration.
Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade in talks for comedy
Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, and David Spade are in talk for an as-yet untitled comedy for Columbia Pictures, Variety reports. The movie, which will be directed by Dennis Dugan (You Don’t Mess With the Zohan), is about five best friends from high school who reunite 30 years later on a Fourth of July weekend. Sandler wrote the screenplay with Fred Wolf (Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star). Production is scheduled to begin this summer.
