Total Recall remake in the works: This is not a dream

Tagged:

Producer Neal Moritz (I Am Legend) and Columbia are in final negotiations to remake Total Recall, Paul Verhoeven’s 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi classic, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Based on the Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale," that smash, in which Arnold played a futuristic Average Joe who may or may not be a secret agent determined to free Mars from its draconian leaders, grossed $261 million worldwide. As Quaid, Arnold slayed Sharon Stone, flirted with three-breasted women, and tracked down a creepy freedom-fighter named Kuato. After 19 years, Moritz is hoping the advancements in technology and state-of-the-art visual effects will help refresh the story.

Harvey and Bob Weinstein had once hoped to develop a remake (or sequel) when they still ran Miramax, but Columbia secured the rights when the Weinsteins left to start their own company.

For me, that was by far the best Arnold movie ever (sorry, but nee on Terminator). I have worn out my DVD watching it. Ronny Cox, Michael’s Ironside and Champion did some of the most diabolical acting I have ever seen. I can still hear… 2 weeks, 2 weeks… get ready for a surprise!!!
Ooh, I think I just wet myself.

It’s bad enough there is a remake of “Karate Kid” being made but now a movie from 1990 is old enough to be remade?
What’s next? Zac Efron as Luke Skywalker?

I dunno, CGI is OK for some things, but not Total Recall. Ray Baker did a fantastic job with Arnold’s face pulling out the tracking device as well as the removal of the fat lady’s head (2 weeks, 2 weeks)as well as so many other tricks in the movie. Unless they can make it look totally real and not like the bomb that was Indy4, I’ll go see it. Please do it justice guys!

Zoey, I think you mean RICK Baker, who actually had nothing to do with the film. The superb make-up and FX were done by Rob Bottin, of THE HOWLING and THE THING fame, and his expert crew.

Hollywood must be running out of scripts. Blah.

Is 2009 the year creativity died? Total Recall, RoboCop, The Never Ending Story, and that is what I ready about just this morning.

When studios remake or reboot a movie, it’s not because they’re running out of ideas. There’s money to be made with existing franchises, but first some of them need (or there is a perceived need) to be ‘refreshed’ to establish new actors, characters, story themes, and connection with the state of the culture. Of course, this doesn’t always work (or is welcomed by the fan base).
