'Twilight': Third film in series, 'Eclipse,' set for June 2010

Categories: Film

A third film in "The Twilight Saga" is now set, reports Deadline Hollywood Daily. Summit Entertainment, the studio behind the series based on Stephenie Meyer’s teen vampire books, has apparently decided to release Eclipse on June 30, 2010. That’s little more than half a year after the series’ second movie, New Moon, is due to come out, on Nov. 20, 2009. No director for the third film is confirmed yet, and New Moon and Eclipse aren’t set to be filmed back-to-back.

Deadline Hollywood Daily also quotes this Eclipse plot summary from Summit: "As Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and amalicious vampire continues her quest for revenge, Bella once againfinds herself surrounded by danger. In the midst of it all, she isforced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship withJacob — knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite theageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduationquickly approaching, Bella has one more decision to make: life ordeath."

    money! money! money!

    • lisa

yeah but its better not to wait as long as the harry potter films it takes to long when you have to wait a year or more as it is we still have two fims left in the harry potter films i for one cant wait to see the next twlight film in june

  • Kalie

Why June of 2010? Why not wait until November? I don’t like that they’re rushing these movies into production. It’s not like the fans will lose interest if we have to wait just one year for another sequel.

    • Twilighter

Oh-oh-oh! Hey, it’s not like they’re rushin’ it only because of our interest. They MUST rush it simply because Edward and Bella(and all the others) stay young forever, wich will not happen to Rob, Kristen and the rest of the cast.

  • Kim

Something tells me the release date will get pushed back. haha, they won’t be able to make it on time.

  • SB

Oh my. Summit isn’t really shooting for quality here are they? As Sara put it: “Money, money, money.”

  • Tina

    uh oh…

  • naruto1

umm…why not november 2010? its called harry potter and the deathly hollows

Actually they may be doing it to save money too. They filmed the 2nd and 3rd Pirates of the Caribbean movies at the same time and the 2 final Lord of the Rings movies as well. makes good money sense to me. If that is the case.

  • Nerwen Aldarion

I agree, I hope they know what they are doing. Making back to back movies has worked before but Summit better know that it is better to wait longer for good movies than throw out a couple of crappy ones. They better be good because the TwiFans will be after them like rabid dogs if they aren’t

    • Sandy

I want Chris Weitz to produce the EClIPSE.. New Moon was so much better than Twilight. Its not a big deal when the next movie comes out…

  • lilo

thats barely 6 months after new moon. they really dont care to stay true to the books, or the fans who make it the success it is. i think stephenie should have chosen a different company to sale the franchise to. summit sucks.

  • Alyssa

Why are they picking June of 2010? I dont watch the films, but this seems like a bad move if they want the films to succeed because Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be out in May of 2010.

  • M

Actually Harry Potter & Deathly Hollows will be released Nov 2010 and May 2011. They can’t go against it.

  • Alyssa

Well there lucky in that sense then, they would be crushed by Harry if it was in May of 2010.

  • Nikki

I love twilight and love that the movies are coming out so fast !! super excited !! I just hope they can do all of them well =)

    • Michele

They didn’t do the first one good :( most people that read the book were very disapointed in the movie me included there was no chemestry and they didnt even play the parts right I hope the second director they had does a better job and they will have a bigger buget with new moon so hopefully it gets better.

  • Jules

did any of you think that the actors are playing non-aging vampires and they are aging, so it is smart on the studios part to film so close together. Peter Jackson filmed the Lord of the Rings triolgy in one shot. what is the difference. Plus, if both of the films coming out do well that means they might make Breaking Dawn which I think by far might be the best one to make a movie of! So much happens, it is exciting!

    • jacqui

well i agree that they need to film fast to stop aging and if they dont make th fourth one im starting a riot and protest till they do even if i have to go to there houses and stalk them ever it takes thats my fav book ever and im more worried that they changed victoria that is so not cool

  • Demi

Jules, Peter Jackson was also the ONLY director and worked w/ the same cast and crew during the entire filming of the LOTR movies!
the pace that Summit is putting out these movies is maddening!! it’s ridiculous! AFAIK, they haven’t even started filming New Moon, or even finish hiring the cast! wasn’t there some major issue over casting the rest of Jacob’s tribe? the movie is supposed to be released in 8 months and I don’t think they’ve even begun. now they’ve got to do two movies in less than 18 months?
I’m not a huge fan of the series (I personally thought the books weren’t that great), but if this series sinks, I think the studio will be to blame here. lots of people that liked the books aren’t happy w/ how the series is being treated in being brought to the big screen

  • Mister F

Talk about overkill! I bet we’re going to get some cranky actors afterward! It’s bad enough that they’re rushing for the 2nd movie.
And releasing a sequel only half a year later is usually bad business. The Matrix and Pirates did it with big drops in their 3rd outings.

  • BaLi

I’m excited but also a little worried as to how the movie might turn out with such short production time… But I guess that they have to rush to make the movies ’cause they can’t let the characters get too old… Robert is already 22… But I really hope they make the movies good!!

  • Stacey

To me. They are pushing it too much. Why not let the buzz build between movies. Harry Potter movies are such a great hit because there is time between them. Trying to do one in November of 09 and the other in June 10, is overkill in my view. And is losing out on the creative input of the people involved… They shouldn’t be rushing so much!

  • Nicky

Well you know it only takes 3 or 4 months for the filming, the actors could potentially have 2 or 3 months off inbetween filming each one… Also they can then ‘move-on’. I’m sure Rob and Kristen will be happy to go back to less hyped indie films.

  • stella

I have no idea how all the pre, during and post-production stuff works, but I don’t think this is necessarily a bad thing. If I were one of the major actors tied to the movie, I would want to get these made as soon as possible so as not to risk burn out over being tied to the Twilight Saga AND be able to pursue other projects.
Yes, Kristen Stewart is making other movies right now but didn’t Robert Pattinson have to drop out of a movie awhile back due to tight schedules? I don’t doubt he is a gracious man but I know I would feel a teeny bit annoyed that I would have to shelve other creative opportunities for a particular time. Plus, if the movies were released at the same time as HP movies, there would be no way to stop the comparisons that would happen, no matter how much people try to say one should not compare them. I say go for it. So much of the foundation has already been laid. What needs work is the SCREENPLAY and MORE MONEY which (I hope) happens with New Moon.

  • Stacy

I agree with many of the comments here in regard to concerns for rushing the next two films. I enjoyed Twilight the movie, but it was a far cry from the novel (as most book-to-film productions are). A two and even three hour movie cannot even begin to develop the characters we knew when reading. Despite concerns about rushing, we can’t ignore the fact that these films are dealing with young actors, many whose characters cannot age too much (since they are not supposed to at all!). I want Summit to do quality work, but can’t be-grudge them too much in light of all the various concerns. The films won’t ever be the books, but we can hope that they are at least well-done.

  • Caitlin

Actually this is nothing like the filming of LOTR. All three were filmed simultaneously–these movies are being filmed separately and with separate directors. More than that though, the LOTR films were released a full YEAR apart from each other despite their simultaneous filming. Why? Because the people who made those films wanted to make them the best they could be and put a ton of effort into post-production and promotion and they achieved amazing results. I WISH twilight would follow their example; filming these movies together would be smart, but releasing them so close together is simply moronic. It’s like they’re trying to make it as difficult as possible for themselves…

  • kristi

I AM JUST WONDERING WHERE DOES BREAKING DAWN FIT IN?!? THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT BOOK. I HAVE HEARD THAT IT WILL NOT BE MADE INTO A MOVIE BECAUSE IT HAS TO MANY “ADULT” PARTS FOR THEM TO KEEP IT PG-13. I AM NOT A TEEN AND I WANT TO SEE THE MOVIE. HAVE THE TEENS BRING THERE PARENTS TO SEE IT IF IT IS RATED R. THAT BOOK BRINGS IT ALL TOGETHER. IF THEY DONT MAKE THAT MOVIE THEN WHATS THE POINTS OF THE OTHER ONES?? I AM EXCITED ABOUT NEW MOON AND ECLIPSE BUT I AM MOST EXCITED ABOUT NEW MOON!!

  • Nikki

I’m glad for New Moon and Eclipse to come out, I mean you guys that are already yelling about Breaking Dawn, I mean c’mon, they’re barely making New Moon and Eclipse. And anyways on in interview they already confirmed they’re making all three sequels. So just take a chilaxitve. The cast for Twilight was great, don’t have a fit. Just stay cool and calm like a cucumber, they will come out. Mark my words.

  • megan

they have to make them fast because the cullens cant change i read that in one of her interviews they are not sure on breaking dawn because they dont know how to do bellas child(cant remember how to spell her name) but a child cant play the role they said so they arent sure if they can do it by computer its all on stephanies web site each book has qs answered check it out some of u are wayyy off

  • Shortii

It actually would make sense for them to film them close together because 90% of New Moon and Eclipse is taking place their last semester of senior yr. so I think it would only make sense, they can’t really age too much or it wouldn’t work out right.
I do hope they make Breaking Dawn though. It’ll just suck if they don’t.

  • twilighter

wow thats fast but i aint complaining. i just hope they dont throw no BS together.

  • LA

The movie was awesome, the books were double awesome! I can not wait to see the next movie. I would like to see the four books become movies (rating change or not!) The last book I read 3 times, The movie will be hot!

  • Liberty

That would be cool! Im excited but also a little worried as to how the movie might turn out with such short production time… But I guess that they have to rush to make the movies ’cause they can’t let the characters get too old.. I really hope they make the movies good!! I love twilight and love that the movies are coming out so fast !! I just hope they can do all of them well =)
