Peter Gabriel won't sing at the Oscars

Tags: ,

Peter Gabriel has opted out of performing at this year’s Academy Awards, according to Variety. Gabriel was booked to sing "Down to Earth," the nominated original song from WALL-E that he cowrote with composer Thomas Newman. But Oscar show producers Bill Condon and Laurence Mark are said to be cramming the song nominees into a medley format this year, which would have forced Gabriel to perform only one minute of his nearly six-minute tune. In response, Gabriel has simply declined to perform, although he still plans to attend the event.

Yeah, I guess it’s too much to ask a nominee to perform the entirety of their song. I don’t blame Gabriel for opting out.

Really? Only 3 nominated songs and they STILL have to cram it into a medley?? You spoil us, Oscar…

  • Jenna

ahhhh they cannot do a MEDLEY! what the hell oscars… i want to hear the whole song. for all six. period.

What a shame. I would rather watch a longer Oscars if I could enjoy some of it such as song performances.

Seriously, there are only 3 songs nominated this year. It’s ridiculous for them to only have one minute. And the two other songs are from the same movie, so bonus for them. Last year there were 2 from Enchanted, one from Once, Dreamgirls had a couple of songs. That was may fave part last year, was watching the songs, ’cause the other films nominated I hadn’t seen.

“Down to Earth” is a boring song, so if Peter Gabriel is opting not to perform, good for us… Now we have more time for Jai Ho a way better song

Is this Bill Condon’s way of payback on the Academy? He didn’t get a directing nod for “Gods and Monsters,” lost the screenplay nod for “Chicago,” and was completely shunned for “Dreamgirls.” Come on, Bill, let bygones be bygones. At least you got one Oscar. Let Peter Gabriel sing. Let A.R. Rahman swamp the stage in dancers and lights. And give them their full time. You don’t really think people don’t watch the Oscars because the songs suck, do you? Well, maybe they do, but the endless montages blow worse. I’ll bet if you cut all that silly crap out, you can give the singers their due.

Between the shortened songs, Hugh Jackman hosting and the snubbing of The Dark Knight, this promises to be the worst Oscar show in history.

    1) THERE ARE 3 FREAKING SONGS ACADEMY! 3!!!! You gypped us out of more songs.
    2) cramming them into one minute each? Look, I KNOW you want to cut time, but this is NOT the way to do it. We WANT to hear the songs. This doesn’t work.

Not only should The Wrestler have been nominated in this category, it should have been the easy winner.

With 2 of the 3 nominated songs performed entirely in Hindi, the Academy could just imagine the number of remotes clicking if they were performed in their entirety. Frankly if you can’t get big names doing familiar songs, why perform them at all?

wow that sucks. I guess I will just have to change the channel when the musical nominees are on. I still don’t understand how 2 songs from Slumdog got nominated and there are only 3 nominees this year.
