'Slumdog Millionaire' sweeps BAFTAs

Tags:

Slumdog Millionaire added to its ever-increasing awards-season haul on Sunday with seven wins at the annual British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards. Danny Boyle’s Mumbai-set drama swept the top prizes — Best Film, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Other victors included In Bruges for Best Original Screenplay, WALL-E for Best Animated Film, Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) for Leading Actor, Kate Winslet (The Reader) for Leading Actress, Penelope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) for Supporting Actress, and Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight) for Supporting Actor.

The BAFTAs are often considered a predictor of Academy Award tallies, although just two of this decade’s eight Best Picture Oscar winners also went home with the top prize at the BAFTAs — Gladiator and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

I am going to keep typing this, everytime I see Mickey Rourke’s name in the hopes that my good thoughts and efforts will result in his winning an Oscar. The man is a god. he is talented and charming and real and damaged and sexy and hot and he deserves an Oscar. Not because of his “comeback” but because he was amazing in that role.

I agree Shannon, Mick won my heart w/ that performance, he was amazing. I hope he wins so bad!

Why wasn’t Heath Ledger included in the “In Memoriam” section? Every awards show has excluded him in that part of the show. It is great that he won all the awards he deserved, but that does not give him enough recognition.

    Slumdog deserved it…

Ledger isn’t included because he passed away January 22nd last year. If you can recall, he was recognized at the Oscars and most other awards shows in 2008.

I finally saw the Wrestler this weekend, one of the movies I was most looking forward to…and I was totally underwhelmed–by the movie, and Mickey Rourke’s performance. Really? This is what people have been going crazy over?
It certainly was a physically taxing role and he was good…worthy of a nomination, I suppose (this isn’t the strongest year for leading actors). But certainly no better than Sean Penn, Frank Langella, or Richard Jenkins. I hope this doesn’t increase his Oscar momentum.

Heath passed away on January 22, 2008, just like all the other actors included in the in memoriam section. yes he was included last year, and he was included at the last minute, but they should still include him this year because all the other dearly departed from 2008 are included.
