Michael Shannon, riding high on last week’s Oscar nomination for his supporting role in Revolutionary Road, will co-star in Martin Scorsese’s HBO pilot Boardwalk Empire, according to THR.com. The drama series will be based on Nelson Johnston’s book about Prohibition-era Atlantic City. Shannon’s been tapped to play a senior government agent charged with controlling bootlegging, while Steve Buscemi will star as liquor distribution ring-master Nucky Johnson. Vincent Piazza (The Sopranos, Rescue Me) and Michael Pitt (Funny Games) will co-star.

Can absolutely not wait for this. It’s not official that HBO will pick it up but I think it’s a no brainer for a late fall run for season 1. Sounds brilliant.
